Director of Cutting-edge Rural Studio Comes to Macedonia

July 2 & 3, 2008

David Buege, Interim Director of Rural Studio at Auburn University in Alabama is now in Macedonia as part of the U.S. Speakers Program in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture at the Universities of St. Cyrils and Methiodius. Rural Studio is known worldwide for its innovative program in teaching architecture students about social responsibility in their field. Each year, students build five homes in rural west Alabama for disadvantaged residents. Buege has taught at Auburn University, Mississippi State University, University of Arkansas, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and other universities. He is a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Princeton University.

June 19 - July 3, 2008 Summer Creative Writing Workshop: The Art of Words

Watch a clip of the A1 Morning Show’s coverage of Cultural Envoy Merrilee Cunningham’s creative writing class at American Corner Skopje. Cunningham, a noted poet and university professor, has been writer-in-residence at our American Corners since June 17. She is currently teaching two classes at American Corner Bitola. This project is a collaboration among the U.S. Embassy, the Educational and Cultural Affairs bureau of the Department of State, and Writers in the Schools in Houston, Texas...(watch video file - size 12MB).

Ambassador Milovanovic:…”The ceremony today is clear evidence of the strong support the US Government provides the Government of Macedonia in its efforts to address organized crime and drug trafficking here in Macedonia. It also shows what is possible when ministries in Macedonia work together to address a common need, as the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Interior have done. In my own Mission, this project is a model example of interagency teamwork, involving active collaboration between the Departments of Justice, Defense, and State, in close cooperation with the U.S. European Command, EUCOM, based in Germany.”…more.

USAID Administrator Henrietta Fore Receives a Warm Welcome in Macedonia

From June 8th through 10th , USAID Administrator Henrietta Fore visited USAID projects ranging from school renovations to a newly created digital media park which recently won an Oscar for special effects. Ms. Fore also met with President Crvenkovski and a group of NGO leaders to stress the United States’ continued support for programs in education, good governance and economic growth. In an interview with Tea Moderna, Ms. Fore discussed the importance of women in leadership positions and highlighted the influential roles many women have in the US Government.
