Information for Travelers

Entry Requirements 

American citizens are not required to obtain a visa in order to enter Macedonia for tourist/business purposes for a stay of up to 90 days. Entry stamps are issued at airports or land border crossing points, which grant permission to remain 90 days.

Within three days of arrival in Macedonia, U.S. citizens should register in person with the police at the nearest police station. Those staying in private accommodation or renting an apartment will have to register together with the owner or landlord of the apartment. Hotels are responsible for the registration of foreign guests.

How to Apply for a Macedonian Visa

Individuals planning to work, study or remain longer then 90 days in Macedonia, must obtain an entry visa prior to their arrival in Macedonia. Macedonian visas, as opposed to entry stamps, can only be issued at a Macedonian Embassy or Consulate in a foreign country. American citizens resident in the United States may apply at either the:

Documents required for obtaining a work/professional engagement or student visa:

  • Valid passport;
  • Application form (must be requested from the Macedonian Embassy or Consulate) ;
  • Letter from the employer, requesting a visa for the person who will be employed by them, or professionally engaged (for humanitarian, religious, sport or other type of organization), or letter from the University confirming the enrollment of the student;
  • 2 recent photographs;
  • $35 application fee.

Macedonian authorities advise applicants to allow at least one month for processing.
An entry visa is normally issued with the annotation "employment," "professional engagement," or "student" and is valid for 30 days. The visa holder must enter Macedonia within this timeframe.

As soon as the person enters Macedonia he/she has to file a request for temporary residence at a local office of the Sector for Foreigners, which is part of the Ministry of Interior, depending upon their place of residence. In Skopje, the Sector for Foreigners is located on the 9th floor of the Macedonian Radio and Television Building. The office is open Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 8:30 and 11:00 am. The Macedonian Radio and Television Building is located at Boulevard Goce Delcev bb. Should you need to speak with someone regarding your application, please call (02) 311-6678.

When applying for temporary residence based on employment the following should be submitted:

  • Application form for a Macedonian visa and for temporary residency (each form costs a total of 60 denars; 10 denars for the form itself and 50 denars for the accompanying administrative stamp. The forms are available to purchase from a small store outside the office of the Sector for Foreigners);
  • 690 denar fee for the residency application;
  • 1400 denar fee for multiple entry one-year visa;
  • Two passport-sized photographs per person;
  • Employment contract;
  • Approval from the Employment Bureau of Macedonia (provided by the employer);
  • Lease document for renting a house or an apartment.

Note: Fees are subject to change without prior notice.

Applicants for professional engagement should also submit the following additional documents along with the above mentioned:

  • Written recommendation from the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy (for humanitarian organizations only);
  • Written recommendation from the State Office of the Religious Communities (for religious engagement only);
  • Written recommendation from the Agency for Youth and Sport (for sport engagement only)
  • Written recommendation from the Information Agency (for journalists only);
  • Court registration of the Humanitarian, Religious or other Non Government Organization.

Students applying for temporary residence based on their enrollment in a Macedonian Faculty should submit a letter from the appropriate Faculty confirming their enrollment, along with the above-mentioned forms and fees.

Applicants are required to submit their completed applications in person. If all documentation is in order, the entry exit visa and the temporary residency permit will be issued the same day, and can be picked up at 2:00 pm, at the same location.
